It stinks when you watch the news and all you find is negativity. Tonight however, I saw a story that, though heartbreaking, touched my heart. The story was about Jeremy Henwood, a 36 year old police officer from San Diego, California. He died August 6, 2011 from a gunshot wound to the head while he was on patrol. The great part of the story is what happened right before he got shot. Officer Henwood was in McDonalds just before the fatal shooting to buying some food when a 10 year old boy approached him to ask for some change. Officer Henwood asked what the change was for and the boy said he wanted to buy some cookies. Officer Henwood paid for the boys food and took just a few minutes to talk to the boy and ask the boy what he wanted to be when grew up. The boy said he wanted to be an NBA star. Officer Henwood told him that it takes a lot of hard work to get there. It was a brief conversation, but he took the time to not only do something nice but he gave a little motivation to a boy he didn’t even know and he didn’t have to even care about. Then the officer headed back out on patrol where he was shot. This is a man who had just gotten done serving as a Marine Reservist in both Iraq and Afghanistan and came home and rejoined the police force. He spent a lot of his life fighting for our country and then protecting and serving here at home. And, as simple as the exchange might have been in McDonalds, you can see what kind of man he was. This is a reminder that people can be nice, and do things simply out of the kindness of their heart. It is really good to know that with all the fighting, hate, and cruelty going on in our world there are still people out there trying to do the right thing. - A man is great by deeds, not by birth.
