Now that I am raising a son and a daughter I don’t concentrate on weight or dieting when I talk my kids. My conversations with them are all about what foods are healthy or about not eating too much junk food. But they are children. They want soda, cookies and candy as often as possible. It is my job as their mom to make sure that they eat more healthy foods then the bad stuff. But the bad stuff is out there taunting us on a daily basis, and while I have enough trouble saying no, no, no to them when they ask for junk food, I also have to remind myself to grab an apple instead of that Almond Joy.
Over the past two days it has been all over the news that children who are obese have a much higher level of BPA in their systems than thinner children. The other news story making the rounds today is that the levels of arsenic in rice is too high. Now I’m looking at the brown rice I have left over in a plastic container in my refrigerator and I wonder what is going to kill me first, the arsenic in the rice or the BPA that is leaking from my plastic container into the rice?
The funny thing is that Jody always laughs at me when I get all paranoid about this stuff and he says that everything is going to kill us. In a way he is right. How about those strawberries I gave the kids this morning with their cereal, or the salad I had for lunch? How many fruits and vegetables have been genetically modified or sprayed down with pesticides making them just as poisonous as the rice? As I am writing this I am even thinking that all of those good fruits and vegetables are watered with the same water that is causing the arsenic in the rice. Is Jody right… will everything kill us?
I know that fruits and vegetables are better for my children that chicken nuggets from McDonalds. But I guess what I want is for someone to tell me… can I really win this battle?
