Jody and I moved to New Hampshire for a while about 12 years ago. We moved to New Hampshire because Jody was working in Massachusetts for a while. New Hampshire is a beautiful state and the few years we spent there have left lasting memories.
While we were there we just had BJ with us at the time. Jody’s father had lived with us for a while back in Florida, but when life took Jody and I to New Hampshire his father decided to stay in Florida. Well, he and BJ had been the best of friends while he was living with us. So, when we moved out of state without him I felt like BJ was sad, lonely just sitting home all day long while Jody and I worked.
I kept telling Jody I wanted another pug, but he thought I was crazy. He was sure BJ was fine on his own. I pestered Jody and drove him crazy, I just felt like something was missing. It seems to be common for people with pugs to have them in pairs. Is it the pugs or the pug owners that need the two?
One day while Jody was out at work I took a ride out to a pug breeders home, fell in love with this little pug girl and brought her home. When Jody got home that night he came home to quite a surprise. He picked out her name, Chowder, because she was from New England and now we would always have a reminder of our time in New Hampshire.
If I remember correctly I paid about $600.00 for her. Money well spent because she has been my perfect lap dog since she came home with me. She is 11 years old now and she is perfectly happy to sleep on the couch all day. If I am on the computer she will find a spot on the couch in the computer room near me. At night when I am ready to veg out for the evening and catch up on my reality television, I sit down on the couch and as soon as I sit down Chowder comes over and stretches herself across my lap and goes to sleep. When she is gone I won’t know what to do without her lying across my lap.
Two years ago, when we lost BJ and I was so upset and I was sure I would never get another dog again. The pain was so bad. But, after a few months it really felt like something was missing in our home again. Thanks to Facebook I became a fan of the Compassionate Pug Rescue group here in Florida who regularly put up pictures of pugs and pug mixes they have up for adoption. After a long battle and wearing Jody down we adopted Buckwheat, a pug/beagle mix. It is a little different adopting a dog and not getting a dog as a brand new puppy. Buckwheat came to us a few months old. He was found wandering around a baseball field with two other puppies and he was taken in by the pug rescue group. He is afraid of everyone and everything but he is still a great companion.
Jaden and Jaime have now had the experience of having a puppy of their own. He jumps up and goes crazy when Jaden gets out of bed in the morning. He lets Jaime rub his tummy and kiss him, as long as she doesn’t pull him by the neck. He goes running with me, tail wagging all the way. Jody has his moments with Buckwheat too. When Buckwheat is looking at Jody with his big brown eyes he will stop and scratch him behind the ears or throw his favorite monkey toy across the house for a quick game of fetch. It didn’t take long for Buckwheat to become part of the Rosenberg family, and I can’t imagine life without him.
I am a sucker for those commercials of dogs that need to be adopted. I would take them all home if I could. Dogs are just looking for someone to feed them and give them a good home, and in return they love you unconditionally. They are the best!
I just want someone to say to me, oh,
I'll always be there when you wake, yeah.
Ya know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today.
So stay with me and I'll have it made.
