When I was old enough to take drivers education in school I took it, because let’s face it, there is nothing at all scary about driving around a parking lot. But, out on the open road I was scared to death! I used to have dreams that I would die in a fiery car crash. I’m not joking; I was scared out of my mind.
It helped that all of my friends had cars and licenses, so I was always bumming a ride off of my friends, and now looking back at that I hope I thanked them and maybe chipped in for gas. It was always so much better to get a ride from a friend than having to take a bus to school or have your parents drop you off.
But, finally when I reached about 22-23 I got my butt in gear and got my drivers license. I was still kind of scared, and when you are a new driver everyone in the car with you turns to check and make sure you are clear before every turn and lane change you ever make, which only makes you more nervous.
When Jody and I were living in Tallahassee he would let me use his car to get to and from work. Well, one night I was coming home after a closing shift at the mall. I had only been driving for a short period of time. I saw a cop turned on his lights behind me and he wanted me to pull over. I was coming down a long dark road, by myself, so I kept going until I reached the first lit area I could find, which was a gas station. It was in the days before everyone had a cell phone, and I was a girl all alone, so I was not pulling over on a dark road… no way!
When I finally reached the gas station, I guess the cops in the car were a little pissed that I had waited so long to actually pull over. When I stopped the car, two cops jumped out of their police car and started screaming at me to put my hands up! They pulled their guns on me and opened my car door and made me get out of the car with my hands in the air. Everyone at the gas station was watching! I was freaking out!
When I finally got them to tell me what I had done wrong they told me they just wanted to pull me over and tell me one of my taillights was out on Jody’s car. But, since I had waited so long to pull over they thought I was making a run for it. That’s pretty funny because I could not have been going over 25-30 miles per hour down that dark road. And I thought I was paranoid.
That was my first experience being pulled over and let me tell you I am lucky I didn’t pee my pants.
At around 25 I finally got my own car, a used Nissan Sentra. It was not for another 15 years that I got pulled over by a cop again, but that time I deserved it because I had made an illegal u-turn.
Still to this day I hate to drive with other drivers in the car. I always let Jody drive, which is good because he likes to have the control. I’m not saying I’m the best driver in the world, but I have been driving for the past 20+ years and I haven’t had any accidents that were too serious. Just a couple of dings on a bumper or two. And, never again have I ever tried to run from the police!
Got you where you wanna go if you know what i mean
Got a ride that smoother than a limosine
Can you handle the curves? Can you run all the lights?
If you can baby boy then we can go all night
Cos I'm 0 to 60 in three point five
Baby you got the keys-
Now shut up and drive.
